Easter 2021. The Jesus Christ Superstar Do-It-Yourself Messiah Complex is a multi-disciplinary
neo-Vaudeville variety show, based on the 1970 ALBUM version of the rock opera
by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The concept is to “do” or “play” the entire album in order,
in a celebratory, salon-like atmosphere.
For this project, we used Streamyard as a main broadcasting platform to ease switching between live and prerecorded segments,
as well as introductions by the emcee. Separately from this, I acted as a “Zoom SM” which gave the following information to the actors:
An “up next” that, through control processes, was easy to update through the run,
A background which was either my camera feed for visual countdown-giving, or one of two colors to signal the Zoom being LIVE or NOT LIVE.
An “output feed” that allowed performers to visually know where the show was at while being on deck in Zoom/not being able watch on their other device or tab.
While visible to the actors, this feed (and my vocal standbys/countdowns) were kept from being pushed to the stream.
In addition to making karaoke-style scrolling lyric overlays for a portion of the show, I also designed the title cards which preceded each piece. They ranged from a simple fadein for The Overture, to an INCEPTION homage for Trial Before Pilate, to ballyhooing spotlights for The Crucifixion.
Additionally, there were two redundant backup systems in place in case either the Primary Broadcaster went offline, or one of my two devices involved in the broadcast went down.
Here’s a simplified drawing of my setup.
